Rainbow Row refers to the row of 13 pastel-colored historic homes located on East Bay Street, just along the Battery, and is one of Charleston’s most photographed spots.

Named for a civil-war coastal defense artillery battery at the site, The Battery stretches along the lower shores of the Charleston peninsula. Fort Sumter is visible from the Cooper River side, as is Castle Pinckney, the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, Fort Moultrie, and Sullivan’s Island.

Charleston-City-Market.webp

Established in the 1790s, the market stretches for four city blocks from Market Hall through a continuous series of buildings, ending at East Bay Street. This is a great place to shop for Charleston classics, like handmade Gullah sweetgrass baskets, paintings, and jewelry.

Many companies provide historic site-seeing tours of downtown Charleston in horse-drawn carriages. They'll cover many of the places on this page and provide a brief history. If it's too hot for a carriage ride, air conditioned bus tours from the Visitors Center offer the same sites and information. It's a great way to learn about and see the whole city.

Located in Riley Waterfront Park, the
Pineapple Fountain, an iconic symbol of Charleston, is a popular attraction within the park. Pineapples are common throughout the city, representing its tradition of hospitality. The fountain itself also represents restoration and hope, as it was opened to the public in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo. It's one of the first places we visited after we moved to Charleston and the entire park is worth a visit.

A striking cable-stayed bridge connecting Charleston to Mount Pleasant, it offers breathtaking views of the harbor and is a favorite for walkers and cyclists.

This lesser-known bridge provides stunning views of the surrounding marshlands and waterways, often frequented by bird watchers and photographers.

A picturesque spot combining serene views of the Wando River with recreational opportunities, from kayaking to waterfront dining. This is within walking distance from our apartment on Daniel Island and one of our favorite spots to visit. We spend a lot of time on this swing, looking out on the water and drinking coffee from The Dime (a cute little cafe a short walk from here).

The only tea plantation in North America, it offers a fascinating look at tea production along with tranquil views of acres of tea plants. We loved visiting and trying all of their teas. We also spent a lot of time wandering through their gift shop. The tour into the fields and greenhouse and the behind the scene look at their production line was really cool.

Guided tours that take visitors through Charleston’s rich history, exploring historic sites, cobblestone streets, and antebellum mansions. There are a number of different companies that offer these tours, and we've done quite a few of them. Viator is a great resource to book these (along with other fun Charleston tours), but GrayLine Tours was one of our favorites. It's a great way to explore the city while enjoying the ever-so-important AC in warmer months!

Located on Sullivan’s Island, Fort Moultrie played a significant role in both the American Revolution and the Civil War. Its construction from palmetto logs famously withstood British cannon fire during the Battle of Sullivan’s Island in 1776, leading to the palmetto tree becoming a symbol of South Carolina.
